Julie Millisky opened the eyes of many of the conferees who were attentive. She opened her speech regarding values. She had everybody write down their top ten values from a list of more than 100, after everybody had their ten, she had us cross out five that were not as valuable, then two more, so that we were left with our top three. These three are the things that make us get up in the morning, and strive to do the best that you can be. Millisky said how its important that we know our values now, so that they can help us with decisions later in life. She also exemplifies that these values may change over the course of our lives. As her speech progresses Millisky beings to go more in depth. Millisky talked about our inner critic, the "thing" that stopped us from doing things that made us vulnerable. She helped us put a face to that voice, distinguish ourselves from it, and know that we are not our inner critic. "Our inner critic is having a bad day, we are not". Millisky also gave ideas of how to deal with this, she simply said to tell our inner critic to "go away" or "not right now, maybe later." This was inspiring to hear as it helped the conferees know how their inner critic acts and how to mute the voice in their heads.
