ShelterBox is an organization lead by Rotary International that provides necessary living equipment for families that have been hit by a crisis. This box includes a large tent that can fit a family of ten, pots and pans, blankets, and a water purification system that can clean more than 18,000 liters of water without replacement- enough for a family for 3 years. ShelterBox has helped more than 85 countries and 200 disasters; there have been 127,700 shelter boxes deployed. In this activity, Rotary International brought us a few shelter boxes for the conferees to learn about. They learned what goes in a box and what does not, how to pitch the included tent, how to filter the water (or use the device), and the facts and figures of crisis and shelter boxes. It was astonishing to read a few of the numbers - as they were so large (Syrian refugees, liters of water, people that have been effected); and then some numbers were smaller than imagined (number of volunteers). It was an eye opening experience to know what was necessary for people in disasters, and how to help. Using these pieces of the box, like the tent and the water filter, gave a reality to the situation.
